Pool Fencing Rules in Brisbane: What Every Homeowner Must Know
If you own a swimming pool or spa in Brisbane, pool fencing is not optional — it is a legal requirement under Queensland law. The rules are strict, the penalties for non-compliance are significant, and regular inspections are mandatory. Understanding the requirements before you build, renovate or sell a property with a pool is essential.
At NexGen Projects, our fencing team in Brisbane installs compliant pool fencing across the city. Here is everything you need to know about pool fencing regulations in Brisbane and Queensland for 2026.
Queensland Pool Fencing Requirements
Under the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) regulations, all swimming pools and spas that can hold water deeper than 300mm must be enclosed by a compliant pool fence. This applies to in-ground pools, above-ground pools, portable pools and spas.
The key requirements include: minimum fence height of 1,200mm measured from the finished ground level on the outside of the fence. No climbable objects (such as trees, garden beds, furniture or structures) within 900mm of the outside of the fence. Self-closing and self-latching gate that opens outward, away from the pool. Gate latch must be at least 1,500mm from the ground, or shielded if lower. No gaps greater than 100mm in the fence or under the gate.
Pool Fencing Materials Allowed in Brisbane
Several materials are acceptable for pool fencing in Brisbane, provided they meet the Australian Standard AS 1926.1. The most common options are:
Glass pool fencing: Frameless or semi-frameless glass panels provide an unobstructed view of the pool and a modern aesthetic. This is the most popular choice for new pools in Brisbane. Panels must be toughened safety glass at least 12mm thick for frameless installations.
Aluminium pool fencing: Lightweight, durable, and available in a range of colours. Aluminium is a cost-effective option that meets compliance requirements and suits most home styles.
Colorbond or steel panel fencing: Provides complete privacy around the pool area. Must meet height and gap requirements.
Tubular steel fencing: A traditional option that provides visibility and security. Vertical bars must be spaced no more than 100mm apart.
Pool Fence Inspections in Brisbane
Queensland requires pool safety inspections at specific intervals. A pool safety certificate is valid for one year if the property is used as a short-term rental (such as Airbnb), or two years for standard residential properties. When selling a property with a pool, a valid pool safety certificate must be provided to the buyer.
If your pool fence fails an inspection, you will need to bring it into compliance before a certificate can be issued. Common reasons for failure include inadequate gate latching, climbable objects near the fence, gaps exceeding 100mm, and insufficient fence height.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
The penalties for non-compliant pool fencing in Queensland are severe. Fines can exceed $2,000 for individuals and higher for body corporates. More importantly, a non-compliant pool fence puts children at risk — drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death for young children in Australia, and compliant fencing is the single most effective prevention measure.
